No it does not spin. It is just decorative around the base of the gazing ball.

How big is the opening that the neck of the gazing ball fits in

Actually the petals a bendable to fit any size ball. So you can get a nice tight fit on it. Mine has been through some strong winds and stands up fine.

Not including the stand, how high is the globe holder itself?

I would say 3 to 4 inches high.

How do you attach the petal base to the pole? Maybe I am missing a piece. I have the petal piece, the two poles and the base that goes in the ground.

Once the two straight pole sections are assembled, top end of the pole will thread into the base of the flower and the bottom will thread onto the tripod base.
