This Is Venice (This Is...travel) Review: Great book for kids traveling to Venice - I bought this for my 6 and 4 yr old grandchildren that are going to Venice this summer. Their mom said the really enjoyed them Review: Another great one in the series though some baffling omissions about Venice - My (almost 4 year old) son is fascinated by all things travel, and since we must nightly read one of the books in the series (We also have This is... New York, London, Paris, Rome, Britain and This way to the Moon), I figured This is Venice would be a good addition to our library. And indeed, he is fascinated with this city of canals and bridges. The book spends a lot of time on the bridges, and boats, which makes sense as it is so unique. Neither Carnivale or masks are mentioned which seems like an odd omission, but it is, as always, a beautiful and informative book. The book is long, and is very fact filled; there is no storyline or characters you follow around. My child loved this but some children might find it a bit dry.

one of my favorite entries in the sasek series!
sasek's books are all visually lovely, no doubt about it, however they are also incredibly informative, which i quite appreciate. this book is littered with amazing images and interesting facts. i would definitely say this entry has some of the more whimsical (the pigeons page!) and exotic (the grand canal) images present in sasek's books. and as with all the updated printings of sasek's books, there is a welcome list of "this is the city...today!" at the end of the book with changes listed since the original printing. it is great to see both the way the city WAS as well as the present day differences. i highly recommend this book if you are interested in either venice, or simply in wonderful illustration.

This is Venice
I bought this book for my children because I remembered enjoying them very much when I was a child. My reaction now to the "This is..." series is that they are very superficial and light, but that misses the point. As an introduction to new places, to intrigue a child's mind without overwhelming him or her, they are great. The impart an excitement and an optimistic openness. So what that they don't tell the whole story of any city? They light the fuse for a curiosity that will last the rest of one's life. Besides, I very much enjoy that late 50's-early 60's confident characature style.

Classic
These books are so charming and a fine introduction for any age person. I bought Venice, Rome, New York, and Paris for my niece when she gets a little older. She'll be a year in November -- I may be too attached to these by then to let them go. I think these books should be in every child's library.

Beautiful book
Went to Venice and bought this when we got back to talk about what we had seen with our 3 year old. Beautiful book!

Nice book. Good prep for Venice for kids.
Kids (7 and 9) liked the book. They read up on it before our trip out and then were excited to see Venice.

I spend all day on a laptop, and all evening web surfing, so when this arrived, I opened it up, and what a joy. As long as books like this remain in print, paper copies of books will not disappear any time soon. Flicking through this cannot be done on a PC. The tint of the paper and pastel drawings give it a nostalgic feel (because they're old anyway, but last reproduced in 2005). Endnotes provide updates to show how things have changed since the drawings were done, and so there's not too much disappointment if the kids go to Venice and things aren't the same. But there are few of these as Venice has barely changed in 200 years. The graphics are simple, detailed, and alive, the best thing about these books. The text is short, and straight to the point, giving children a reason to pick it up and look through and imagine, without being bogged down with words. If I'd known about these books earlier, I would have bought one for every holiday destination for me (I mean my kids).

The artwork is beautiful. The description of life in Venice is charming and is suitable reading material for a small child. The vocabulary is sufficiently elevated to improve the reader’s language skill.
