This book makes history come alive with detailed and interesting descriptions of Vijayanagar's culture, art, life and greatness. Splendid photos from Hampi make the readers wonder nostalgically about the lost golden past this site represents. Though Vijayanagar was destroyed by invaders, the writer shows that the kingdom's contribution to Indian culture can never be really forgotten. An amazing book with brilliant pictures ! A truly fascinating book.

India has no shortage of great heritage sites. But there is something special about Vijayanagar, one of the most legendary kingdoms in Indian history. Hampi, one of the World Heritage Sites of the UNESCO, is home to the ruins of this magnificent kingdom that thrived for three hundred years. Subhadra Sen Gupta's book on Hampi gives the readers fascinating information about the wealth, power, art, architecture and culture of Vijayanagar. The photos by Clare Arni capture the glory of Hampi's finest pieces of architecture and sculpture. While reading this book I felt that I was visiting Hampi and looking at its beauty. This book is a very good example of how history can be made exciting to the readers. I would like to go to Hampi soon and I think that proves the writer has succeeded in her aim of attracting people to Hampi.

I've been reading this avidly since it arrived a few days ago! Wonderfully written, and clearly well researched, the information is engagingly presented in sections that allow the reader to dip in and out at various places in the book. The coffee table format suits it to a tee.

A comparer avec l'autre livre sur Hampi ces deux ouvrages ne répondant pas à une vue "exhaustive " du site;Celui-ci outre un aperçu historique pénible à lire mais utiles comporte une partie ou l'écrivain en termes choisis nous décrit ses impressions (ce dont un lecteur qui n'est pas allé là-bas ne tire aucun profit et celui qui a vu se fout éperdument car les sensations varient d'un sujet à l'autre).Les images se recoupent dans les deux livres et ne font pas preuve d'une recherche quelconque (le site est très facile à photographier et est photogénique)mais autant on se perd sur le site autant on se perd dans les photos !le livre est bien relié papier glacé belles reproductions.

Amazing coffee table book with details of the architecture and art craft of Hampi temples. Several pictures are there with fine clarity.

Hampi is an extraordinary place and deserving of an excellent book like this. It's both a history and a photographic book.I'd recommend it to anyone who has visited Hampi and anyone interested in archaeology or Indian history.
