Very basic and oddly designed, with some benefits
The book's last section, a career guide examining some of the different paths designers take, is really fascinating. Otherwise, the book is very basic. Almost all of the information here could be gleaned from a basic Google search of what graphic design is. The thing that bothers me about this book the most is its layout; for a book on graphic design, it does a terrible job of guiding the eye, with photos and captions and sidebars on nearly every page which break up the flow of sentences, so on nearly every page the reader is basically encouraged to stop reading the main text and jump over to some side note, then return to the main text, hopefully remembering the foundation of the passage they interrupted. It smacks of someone trying to be flashy with design without considering the reader experience, which is pretty much the opposite of what graphic design textbooks, of all things, should do. That said, the content is okay. It's a very shallow look into the principles of graphic design, which might be good for, say, a high school student who's learning about graphic design for the first time. It could use a lot of fleshing out, and a total aesthetic redesign.
