I'm usually not a fan of that many POVs, but I'm giving this a 5 star review because each story, each point of view added another layer of understanding of the story. I was caught off guard by the twists and turns of this story and the ending most definitely made me gasp. But again, it made sense. Review: A solid and good read - What I liked most about this novel are the interwoven stories of women who make their choices and live with them, even as so much is not in their control. It’s an informative read about the diverse countries in Latin America and a touching read about the complexities in mother-daughter relationships. The novel didn’t knock my socks off, but I was really impressed with the well-rounded character development of each woman in her story. This is a definite strength of the book. I recommend this book for those wanting to read a book with strong female characters or for a very good read about people emigrating from Cuba, Central America, and Mexico, and the challenges of Latin American women, spanning time and a variety of nations.

Nice, but brushes over a lot
That was nice. It was an incredibly sad story, but it was a good read. The plot follows two matriarchal families, one descending from Cuba, the other descendant from El Salvador. Jeanette is a young woman who can't find her way, Ana is a child whose mother gets deported. Story entwines. The book touches on a lot of difficult subjects, both heavily and lightly. Heavy includes drugs, abuse...light includes the social ladder of Latinx immigrants, the role of politics, etc. There is so much in such few pages, and yet it read very easily, but probably because it brushes over a lot. Lots of broad strokes here. Three stars, because I think there is more to be said, but this was probably overly edited to a broader market.

must read
The blending of women’s lives through different cultures and circumstances brings this story to life, it’s hard, it’s sad and it’s a story of survival. Pick it up you won’t put it down.

Very depressing but I’m sure true
Too hard to follow. Why do writers feel it necessary to jump back and froth in story telling? I realize some stories need that to make it more interesting but in this case that wasn’t necessary. Garcia had a good subject matter and should have written it in chronological order. No need to confuse the reader. She could have got her point across without all the jumping around. Keep writing Garcia .. you are very talented.

Depressing
This book jumped around way too much in it's timeline. I think it should have been done chronologically for a better sense of what was going on. With all this jumping around from one year to another it was difficult to keep the characters straight. This by far Was the most depressing book I have ever read. There wasn't any character I would say I liked or that left a lasting impression on me. Jeannette was the character that the novel seemed to center around, but she was such a pathetic character that you couldn't like her. The only good thing she did was let little Ana spend a night when ICE took her mom away. Even the ending was flat in my opinion. Not a multi-generational story I would recommend.

good but hard read
Usually I don’t mind different characters in books, Their own chapters, telling their side of the story. But in this book it was hard to follow at times. And it took me longer than usual to complete. I found myself underwhelmed and pretty confused as to what was happening now. In the end, everything ties together beautifully though and makes sense. It was worth the read. Just make sure there are no distractions and you are prepared to jump around. All in all each characters story was beautiful and it did make sense in the end.

Loved the book.. topics close to my heart and so were the emotions. There was so much packed in a book that is not exhaustingly long - a must read..

I enjoyed the story from the different perspectives. Life comes full circle. Lend a helping hand, and it comes back to you. I would recommend this read to friends.
