can you varnish or polyurethane over it?

Yes. These are, essentially markers to hide scratches. The ink goes into the wood. You could then varnish, or whatever you want.

How fine are tips? similar to a "fine point" permanent marker, or like an "ultra fine" permanent marker? i need to hide fine scratches.

Not fine but put on and wipe off so it stays in cracks only

Could this go over any caulking or sealant?

I think it would be a clear stained color and wipe off easily. I did not use it over a sealant though so I am not positive.

Can this be used on a polyester couch?

Might say on the packaging or you can google the product to see… it’s advertised for wood.
