There's a plate that screws into the wall. The hook goes on the plate and there's a set screw underneath the hook that screws up into the hook and holds it on the plate

Can it be screwed to a solid wood door? What's the depth of the screws?

Sure, it can be screwed to a solid door. As for the depth, since I already installed both of the hooks, I'm guessing the screws are around 1" to 1-1/4" long. BTW, they are really nice hooks, real shiny and well made.
