Q: How grippy is the silicone? Also does the top part of the case fit snugly without the use of the adhesive?

The silicone is grippy enough so it will not fall from your hands, although the top part will not hold in place without the adhesive, you'll have to use the adhesive.

Hi, the moment I saw the case in two parts I wa a wondering the same question. I tried it without adhesive, but I felt a bit insecure, so I finally decided to put the adhesive on top of the AirPods case just for precaution. Hope this help you decide about the adhesive!.
