Does this fit the official ic-705 backpack?

I don't have the backpack, but I do have this case. It doesn't add that much to the overall size of the radio, so I would think it should still fit in the radio pocket. HOWEVER - as I recall, there's a strap in the backpack to hold the radio in place, and I think it mounts to the 1/4x20 hole. On this case, that hole is used by the case to hold it in place (it mounts with 2 M4's and a 1/4x20), so you would lose that option. Another thing is that this case does not work with the Windcamp quick release option. You can make it work, but you need to remove one of the rear bars on the case to make room.

Are the forward facing handles able to be removed?

No, they are part of the integral protection of the cage, and they are the MAIN structures that protect the screen, buttons, and VFO knobs of the IC-705. I personally would NOT want these handles (lift protection devices) to be removed!
