I bought 2 of the 38 pc sets. The two rectangular containers have an insert in the bottom. Is this insert for fruit?

Yes it is. But u can use the containers for whatever you want to with or without inserts. You can for example use them as botom in the middle of two different things. There are may creative ways to use these containers.

What are the sizes of the containers in the 38 pc set? (I haven't seen more than 18 pieces counted.)

The lids are included in the piece count.
