Are there holes in the top and the bottom, or just the top?

There are definitely holes in the bottom and top. Not sure what the other two answers that say otherwise are looking at. I just got mine in today with holes in the bottom and top.

If you use pellets you will want to cover the bottom holes so they don't fall out.

You can use cast iron on anything. Even on an open flame ub a firepit
