I played one, and the holes are extremely far apart. Is this true of all alto recorders, regardless of the material used to make one?

There is nothing unusual about the hole placement on this alto. I have played several and they are all about the same. I also play the tenor which is difficult to pick up and play if I haven't warmed up a bit first. Want some fun? Yamaha also makes a sopranino and it is SMALLER than the normal soprano recorder. It reads the same notation as the alto.

I am debating between this "beginner" alto and one in the 300 series. I am an adult beginner. The 300's seem to be 2 inches longer. Does that matter?

It will matter. You will need to spread you fingers apart more on the longer instrument. It may have a better tone and be worth it. Up to you.
