First, this is a practice mute. Not a performance mute. It sole purpose is to quite your horn so you can play full force and not blast out the neighbors. I would say that you get probably 15% normal volume when you use this mute. So just practicing normal tones with a closed bedroom door between you and the parents should keep the noise away from them so they don't have to turn up the TV volume. lolSecondly, there is a small resistance to your playing. It is very slight but you can feel it at full volume. Think of it as a runner wearing weights during his practice and then when he takes the weights of he can run even faster. The bit of resistance is a good thing to warmup with or even do your full practice with because when you take the mute out Ba da der der! It feels like you just got a second wind. With frequent use during practice I can see this strengthening my lung and playing power. Good investment for a student player that is for sure.

I’ve tried other brands of cup mutes in the 50 years I’ve been playing the trumpet. While other brands have been okay, the Denis Wick cup mute has been fantastic. I love the adjustable feature offered by this cup mute. It lets me choose the type of cup mute sound needed, ranging from an open cup to a closed cup sound. I was most impressed with how in tune the mute was right out of the box. I went to shave the corks to get the mute in tune and found that I had to do very little to bring this mute into pitch. I can’t say that about the competitors’ mutes, but this Denis Wick cup mute was pretty much in tune the first time I put it into my bell. Great product!

It's very quiet, but I think calling it a "hotel" mute Is very generous. I live in a townhouse and I practice in my basement so I try to avoid annoying the neighbors. I say it does a pretty decent job, but I still would choose what hours of the day I play very carefully.

Why did you pick this product vs others?:I previously had the Protec cup mute but the bottom of the mute kept twisting, making it difficult to put the mute in place in the bell and would cause buzzing. The Denis Wick cup mute is solid and helps me produce a great sound.
