You need 2 AA batteries. They last a reasonably long time.

Would this be a good starter set for a very bright nine year old? Can he make his own designs with this set? Will it teach him about engineering?

Yes. My kids had a great time.will teach planning, visualization and engineering skills. May need some adult supervision since some of the directions are very detailed

I'd like to get this but I will also need to get a container to keep all the parts in, any idea how large a container I would need?

If you keep the box like we did you would be able to put every thing back in the box, It does not come with a container. If you need A container you would need about A two to three gallon container

Can the ferris wheel move both clockwise and counterclockwise?

Fun Build with Clear Instructions!

The instructions were very easy to understand and follow. The booklet was well-organized and easy to read, which made the building process smooth. All 744 pieces were included, and everything fit together perfectly. It only took a few hours to complete, and the final build looks amazing! A great set for both kids and adults to enjoy. 8 year old LOVED this

What a hit! Bought for our soon to be 8 year old grandson. About 3 hrs after we left we got a picture of him with his ferris wheel. He is exceptionally bright, according to his school, and his father is an engineer. It might be better for a 9 ir 10 year old, esp if no parents or older siblings will help. It would take me a week IF I was able to complete it at all!The package was on our porch with just a label on the box. No additional packing or box from Amazon. There wasn't scratch or tear on anything, unlike what people said in other reviews. Grandson was excited and happy to receive

Missing a bunch of parts!

My husband and son were having so much fun building the Ferris-wheel but then they noticed they didn’t have enough parts to complete it! They are missing over 50 pieces and can’t continue building! What a shame! Everything was going great and they were having so much fun and couldn’t wait to see it all finished!

great gift- you need to find the instructions else where though

my 9 year old son LOVED this. BUT the instructions only come with the one set of instructions so you need to dig to find the other 2 sets. I wish I could recall where I got them from so I could post the link!!

This is a fantastic set.

My 7yo son loved this. He was reluctant to start it as it looked daunting to him (he enjoys Legos and has done some small K'NEX but nothing like the Ferris wheel). I started it one day (I was a little frustrated he wouldn't try it.) He and I did it for 5 minutes and then he was off. It took him 4-5 hours of focused work to complete it (the hardest part was getting him to take a break and go to bed) and only needed help for 1 part (there is a point where there are 4 different units you construct:3 of the first type; 3 of the 2nd type; 6 of the third type ; 6 of the 4th type if memory serves) that don't repeat and need to be oriented properly-he needed a little help with orienting them properly.

This will blow your kids already creative mind!

The media could not be loaded. I can’t say enough about K’nex if your child loves building. I bought this set for my 7 year old son, and he goes wild with his creativity. He freestyles and builds other creations with it and I love how you can find other manuals on their website.
