Q: Why is this only 28.00 dollars on the StewMac website?

I remember noticing it was cheaper on stew Mac but you had to pay for shipping I think they’re making up the difference in shipping cost but I’m not sure that’s just my guess.

Q: Does it come with instructions?

I do not remember it coming with instructions . It has four sides and the idea is to use it across three frets. And you use whatever side is the right length for where you are at on the neck closer to the nut you’ll use the long and closer to the pick ups you’ll use the shorter and the other two for in between those two extremes. I can tell you that I had purchased a cheaper one and had to send it back because it was not level so I bought the stew Mac and it was dead on accurate if you have Unlevel Fretts it will show you by rocking it back-and-forth if it does not rock it’s level and you need to check it not just in the center of the frets but from the lower E to the high E because they can be off in more than one spot. Q: $40 for a strraight edge? what am I missing?

The length of each side is different to check 2 frets and up to multiple frets. Your paying for multiple length strait edges in one tool. 40 dollars is expensive for a piece of stainless with a straight edge. There is others on the internet cheaper, not from stewmac. Your not missing nothing, its no different from buying a tool from Snap On versus Harbor Freight.
