The photo and "color" or model don't seem to match. the "nh metric" shows miles and inches in the photo. is this correct? i want the mile/inch version

Welcome to the murky world of sizing up compasses. I had trouble shopping too. The photo doesn't match my 30L, and there's no metric scale. On the left is inches. On the top is miles in 1:50,000 scale. On the right is miles in 1:24,000 scale. I like my compass and would recommend it. Hope this helps.

Can you get rid of the silly (i.e. breakable) lanyard snap clip and tie the lanyard (or a piece of paracord) directly to the compass?

I have the snap clip on mine and it will take a lot of pull to get the clip to release. This is a safety feature and I would not disconnect it. Either that or use a cord that will break if an accident does happen. Your life is worth more than a thirty dollar compass.

It comes with more than just basic instructions, there is a complete User Guide.

Is the compass for northern or southern hemisphere ?

The one that I bought is for the northern hemisphere.
