My HVAC suddenly stopped working. The fan wouldn’t turn on, and the AC wasn’t blowing cold air. I called an HVAC service, and they said they’d have to come check the unit, with a $95 dispatch fee plus additional charges for parts and labor. This fixed a problem with the outside unit not running when the rest of the air conditioning system was trying to cool the house. Verified power was getting to the unit and the relay was working, but neither the fan nor the compressor started. The old unit also had oil leaking from it, which suggested it may be the problem. Replacing the capacitor fixed the problem. Next day delivery helped to get the AC repaired quickly in the summer heat. This unit was slightly smaller diameter than the one it replaced, but a little tape around the perimeter helped to snug it in the mounting bracket. Be careful. Turning off the AC does not cut power to the outside unit and it runs on 220VAC. To minimize the chance of electrocution while working on the outside unit, the breaker for the outside unit must be turned-off or the power cut-off at the outside junction box. The old capacitor might hold a residual charge as well. If you are not sure what you are doing, find someone that is.

The product was sitting in my mailbox in 100-degree weather for so long that it was so hot that I worried it had been damaged by the heat. I checked using a multimeter, and one of the leads showed no resistance, so I thought the capacity was damaged by the heat. Nonetheless, the AC fans and compressors came back to life after I replaced the damaged one. Therefore, I believe that my method of testing a capacitor, which is a popular and simple approach, may not be entirely reliable. This is a good capacitor; go ahead and buy it.
