Raphael Kazan Squirrel Quill Mop Brush, 00

The Quill Mop is a brush type not much in use outside of Europe. For its size the brush hair body holds a tremendous amount of paint or ink. At the same time the tip is tapered to a fine point, allowing detail and wash from the same brush. The Raphael Kazan Squirrel Brush, Series 803, Quill Mop is made to the highest standards, using the finest and most consistent hair. The quill holds the brush head to the handle with hand-twisted brass wire. Note that squirrel hair, unlike sable, has no "spring", so if you are used to sable or kolinski I'd recommend a sable quill mop.

I haven't gotten the chance to try out this brush yet but right away the craftsmanship is apparent as well as the care in shipping. Unlike some other brushes I have bought this one came in it's own protected little cardboard box and the adhesive tape used to secure the brush inside wasn't one that left any sticky residue. I will edit this review when I have tested the brush and seen how serval uses treat shedding and shape quality but as of right now I am very pleased with my purchase.

This brush is made in Mauritius, Africa by the longtime Paris, France, brush maker Raphaël. Founded in Paris in 1793 and owned and operated by the Sauer family since 1859, Raphaël is the oldest fine art brush maker in Europe.

Very good value from reliable vendor

I am just beginning in watercolor, but knew I needed a better brush after buying a set that was not Raphael. This brush is recommended in a book by Marie Boudon as one of only two brushes she uses. It is an instant hit with me. Very different from a good quality synthetic by far. And Hyatt's sent this before Amazon said it would be delivered. That is nice customer service!

I use these expensive Sable brushes in watercolor painting and there not cheap! So I think I should expect proper Quality shipping techniques To insure the brushes arrive unbroken.

Squirrel hair is the best for rendering plants and animals in watercolor. It holds water really well and makes a fine tip. One star off for the poor squirrels.

I like to buy good brushes not because I'm an accomplished watercolour painter but to give me at least a chance of producing something half decent. This is a nice brush.

Although it's on the pricey side, the quality is just superb. The size at first seemed very small and thin but I could paint with broad brush stroke as well as fine pointed edges. So I just use one brush to paint everything.
