how much sand does it hold?

Not a lot. They provide a bag of sand with it, and even that was too much. It spills a lot.

Can you put a real pendulum on it and will it still rotate?

For me, the sand and pendulum was the only thing good about this! I threw away the base and made my own with the rest!

It is now year 2020, is the base plastic or Wood? Bullet #2 states “... can bring this unique wooden accent to your desktop. If plastic, remove!!!!

It is plastic base and arm. Pendulum is metal and then there is sand.
