Q: The schematic doesn't really show if I can hook up a reverse osmosis water inlet to it. Do you know if that is possible?

Yes this is possible. Line comes in from the reverse osmosis to the copper from the tap. after you hook up the rest to your hot water tank it will give you filtered HOT and COLD. I would use with this inSinkErator HWT-F1000S(newer and the container is made to handle filtered water(they say that the RO process is so pure it may leach the copper or steel that is comes into contact with on the old ones. I have had mine hooked up for 8months and no issues.) If you look at this product it has a filter if you look at the hookup schematic you will just replace the filter for your reverse osmosis system. It works GREAT. It is possible to run out of water though since you are now getting filtered water from the RO Tank which is not limitless. We have run on when we have had big parties and are filling up pitchers for water or Juice. You then have to wait for the tank to fill back up....that goes the same for the HOT water if you are having a BIG Tea party. If you are ambitious like me you can also split the RO out line and run one into your Fridge for filtered cold water! Yea... Pressure will be a littler lower but works good for those of us who like to drink cold filtered water. Hope this helps! Make sure you get a cabinet liner!!! Lots of places for a potiential leak. I used xtrememats.com you can buy on amazon...well worth the price!

Q: Dose this product contain a hot water tank? just faucet?

They are sold separately. I made the same mistake. When I opened the box, I wondered where the tank was. Still, Insinkerator has done a marvelous job of redesigning and re-engineering the product. It is now excellent and makes better fresh coffee than any drip, as the water temperature is perfect and no coffee or tea is ever burned. If you need rolling boiling water, just pop a cup into a microwave for about 30 seconds, but remember boiling water burns coffee grinds.

Q: How does the child proof feature on this work?

Need to push lever down and back for hot water. Lever cannot move without first pushing it down. Then, it will only move backwards to turn on. It will not move forward.

Q: The description says this unit is meant to be used with a separate filtration unit. Is the filtration unit required or optional?

I would think that this unit can be connected directly to the water line, but it is designed to be the dispenser for the companion water filters. That is how we use it.
