Creative Advertising: Ideas and Techniques from the World's Best Campaigns Review: How brilliant is this?! - I got my copy of Creative Advertising from the Goodwill (who has a store here on desertcart I guess). I don't think they realized what they had. This is an incredible book CRAMMED with advertising brilliance. I may be prejudiced since I grew up when David Olgivy ruled advertising classes in the 70's, but it was wonderful to review old ads and campaigns I was around for when they first ran. The information, tips and campaigns are timeless and absolutely inspiring. I think I caught my breath so much I hyperventilated and about passed out...seriously. There is so much solid, psychologically based persuasive insight in this book it's worth 10 times the cost. If you can find a copy, buy it. It has more insight and tips/exercises for developing your own work that it's a semester in a book. The action steps and how-to's alone are priceless. You won't just look at the pretty pictures with this. If you read the content and creative juice producing tips you'll be glad you have it. I plan to spend the next year or more working through this. Best book I've bought this year. Review: Amazing insights and ideas - Wonderfully crafted. I just took a job in advertising and ordered this while finishing my 2 weeks notice at my old job, which wasn't in advertising. I've used this as a handbook for just looking at products a different way. It's one thing to see ads everyday, all around you. It's another to actually see and understand what the advertisers were going for. Even for non-advertising professionals, this would make a great coffee table book, despite it being a paperback. As an added bonus, one of my new coworkers said had this book as a text book at her highly regarded portfolio school.

Amazing insights and ideas

Valuable book
Had to get this book for an advertising class. Was actually genuinely impressed by it. There’s soooo many fun ads to look at, if you’re into that type of thing. It also helps break down effective advertising step-by-step, which was very helpful.

A creative's best friend.
Finally, a way to beat your caffeine addiction! Creative Advertising. For aspiring and seasoned creatives alike, Creative Advertising is fuel for great ideas. The Kickstart Catalogue is an invaluable resource for getting the creative juices a'flowin. My work noticeably improved after reading this book. I could go on and on, but I don't want to waste your time. Instead of reading this, you should be reading this book. You will not be sorry.

mostly visuals, not traditional textbook
We were required to buy this book for our UT-Austin creative advertising class. I first thought it would be another boring textbook. I was pleasantly surprised that this book breaks down visual concepts and visual communication hierarchies in ads.

A must have for advertising amateurs & professionals
A classic! All the great ads of the last decade are in there. Don't go for a job interview at an ad agency without going through this book. The great thing about this book is that it's not a coffee table book. All the images are illustrations for a carefully drafted book on the different ways to exploit your own creativity to produce potentially great ads.

Very nice
Very nice book with lots of pictures for inspiration. However, I would like to know how successful the ads were and how this is measured. A clever ad does not always translate to improved sales.

Which book to buy on advertising? If you are interested as a lay person in understanding how advertisers work, then "Ogilvy on Advertising" probably can't be beaten -- even though it's quite a few years old now. If you want to understand the history of advertising, then "Twenty Ads that Shook the World" is pretty good. If you are a student, then "The fundamentals of creative advertising" is a good place to begin. If you just want a really beautiful (and inspiring) book, then "Advertising - new techniques for visual seduction" is superb. However, if you are an advertiser, and you want to raise your game, maybe to the world-class, this book is the pick of the bunch. It organises its obligatory (and delicious) pictures of successful ads around the creative process that led to them. The largest section, "The Kickstart Catalogue", gives a "kickstart question" to go with every ad presented. This neatly gets beyond the great frustration of looking at advertising books -- they tell you want wonderful ideas have been used, and are therefore no longer available. Although you can't steal the ad, you can use the kickstart question, such as "How can a benefit be represented by showing the opposite of what people expect?" The Kickstart catalogue occupies 150 of 264 pages. There are also good sections on developing the creative team, on humour, on classic creative techniques and on visualisation, as well as a useful section of interviews and resources. If you just like reading books about advertising, this is probably a nice book to have on your coffee table. If you make your living from advertising creativity, this is probably a book you will want to keep on your desk.
