I've reached the point where my feet and knees are limiting my distance so the desk cycle has taken up the slack. I use it about an hour every day on setting four and it's helped me continue to lose 2 pounds/week.

Q: is it for strengthening the quads?

It's not going to give you bodybuilder legs but it can definitely increase the leg strength of the average person. There are 8 levels of resistance. At the highest setting, pedaling at 30 mph will produce over 400 watts of resistance. You won't be able to pedal at 30 mph for more than a few minutes at the highest setting. At this resistance you will probably want a taller chair so that you can pedal downward. Pedaling downward will prevent you from pushing the bike away from you. However if you use the bike at your desk while working, you will set the resistance much lower and you will pedal slower. I use the bike at a setting of 3 and pedal at 15mph for hours at a time (1 revolution per second). I'm 5'11" and 200 lbs. In this case you are building endurance and burning calories.
