Are the function keys (F1, F2, etc.) directly accessible without having to use another key like the Fn key?

Yes. Be sure you have the keyboard connected to your operating system. I use Windows. I have to use function keys as part of my work and they work just fine. NO Fn key needed.

does the keyboard time out? It's annoying that I have to turn it on after prolonged use

Mine seems to time out after about a minute and most of the time becomes unresponsive. I'm really considering buying the wireless version of this instead as the actual keyboard is excellent.

How is the lag when switching over back and fourth from one device to another?

Depends on your PC’s Bluetooth. On my company laptops I’ve had no issues In nearly 3 years of daily use. On my older desktop PC, it seems to cut in & out, and sometimes a key pressed will be “stuck” on repeat (even though the key is not actually stuck). I’m going to try a new BT dongle to see if that fixes it. Good buy.

I am hard on keyboards and just wanted to know if the Stainless Steel will be better for dropping, traveling, and heavy use?

I have a prev version of this (exactly the same design, just with a USB dongle for connection). I’m really hard on keyboards and this one held up for 2.5 years. I’m just coming back here to buy a new one. I travel a lot and over time the slim keyboard bowed very slightly under packing pressure. I used this at least 40hrs/week on average. Hardly ever needs charging. The A and S keys (I use a lot) have only just started to show wear but the only reason I need a new one it that the space bar has become trigger-light so spaces appear randomly when typing. Best testimony is that I’m buying a new one.
