If you are tired of having to take out and dismantling your submersible filters, I do highly recommend changing to this model, it has made my life so easy and also my fishes seem way less stressed any time I do maintenance, you just need to detach the magnets oh so easily. The filtering material is great quality too and does floss the water perfectly. I also like that you can regulate the flow and that you can hide the heater behind, it seems like the temperature has been more stable since I placed it there. I like that it doesn't generate so much vibration and noise, maybe because it is more stable with 4 suctions cups in the corner and the chasis isn't in direct contact with anything. Just remember to avoid it if your tanks has neocaridina and the like, they will get sucked by it.

Read below to see my original experience which I now realize was more a result of incomplete instructions rather than insufficient design. I did not realize that the entire filter assembly is held to the motor unit by magnets and that if you grasp it by the slots on the side of just the filter housing it pops off easily and is thus easily disassembled and cleaned. I do not think this is clear in the instructions but it is in fact how it works. Thus I take back my negative comments and whole heartedly endorse this filter. PS: I substituted the larger foam filter with a filter bag of charcoal which seems to work better. Sorry about the confusion... This filter is a pain to clean! 20 gallon tank w/ three small gold fish. Expect to clean filter on water change, about every two weeks, but don't expect it to be easy. You must first pry the filter away from the glass with a tool (butter knife) otherwise the suction cups holding it in place pop off then good luck getting it apart to wash the filters. I am a strong man with woodcutter's hands and I had to curse up a storm to get the cover to release. Dirty water, filter crud and mess got all over the counter. It's just a poorly designed latch system that definitely cannot be operated the way it is shown in the elementary brochure. The filter has good flow options but don't try to clean it in polite company!

The reason I am returning this after trying it is because water tends to take the path of least resistance; and the way this filter is designed it enters the sponge chamber above the sponge and also exits the same chamber above the sponge as it travels up to the impeller. This pretty much shows that this filter has quite a bit of bypass and due to that it won't filter as well as it could have if the water entered the sponge chamber from the bottom. However, this filter does have an adjustable flow rate by means of adjusting the method it outputs the water either by a spray bar like effect, or a single high flow output, or a combination of both. I initially bought this for a planted 10 gallon due to the more uniform flow and the low influence on water evaporation it has, compared to using a hang on back unit, but I will likely be going back to using an Aqua Clear 20 or getting a canister filter.
