Is there a protective effect，is it thick enough ？

The gloves are very adequate to withstand cactus spines. I have not used them for rose bushes but I think they would offer good protection.

How does one prevent these gloves from 'hardening' when they have been in touch with water/damp material? Many thanks...

If they garden after getting wet I wear them and they soon soften up again. If you are that worried I suppose you could use one of the many forms of waterproofing there are around today.

Will the arm part easily slide down?

No - the arm part stays in place and protects the arm to just below the elbow. They are the best, most comfortable, gloves my husband has ever used and they give him brilliant protection. He is delighted with them.
