Q: are these sheet protectors the best to use for photos?

Yes they can be used for archiving photos. Are they the best to use, no not necessarily, but the best to use are very expensive and these are cost effective and perform in the same way.. The Smithsonian recommends that plastic used for archival of photos be made of Polyester Film, Polyethylene or Polypropylene as they are acid free and inert. These sheet protectors are made from Polypropylene, per the Avery website. Polypropylene is similar to polyester film in clarity. It is also used as sleeves for storing photographs, papers and philatelic material. The museum often uses polypropylene page protectors for album pages when rehousing a collection.

Q: If I put papers inside for 5-7 yr olds to trace with a dry erase marker, are the protectors rigid enough that when the kids erase, they won't crumple?

I use these for homeschooling a five, now six, year old. I slip the consumeable pages into these sheet protectors. She has no problem erasing when dry erase ink is still fresh, no crumpling-but she is a gentle child. I wash the older drier ink off myself. These are pretty heavy duty and work well for us.
