Q: I cannot seem to get a clear answer to this. Does the zen dac produce better sound? This focus on amplification, the other in sound conversion

The Zen DAC is a DAC/Amp, it converts digital signals into audio you can hear and amplifies it. It will have inherently worse sound coming out of it's amp then having a dedicated AMP. To say that either has "better" sound is partly subjective over how the sound literally sounds, but also a bit objective in how clean that sound is and how well that sound is reproduced or amplified. you will get better sound from a Dedicated DAC and a Dedicated AMP then you would from a combo unit. How much you want to spend on these is also important, while there is little you can gain from spending more money on a DAC, spending more on an AMP, can and often does offer a better sound or a more colorful sound depending on context. Of course you have to have the Hearing and the Headphones/speakers to hear the difference.

Q: Does connection headphones disconnects pre-out on the back of the unit?

plugging in headphones doesn't seem to cut outputs on back, at least on the one I have now, but I have had bad luck with this unit.
