Q: Can you overlap them to make a continous edge for a table

I would not advise it. The ends are U -shaped in order to hammer them in to the wood. You would have to make the upper one wider to fit over the one beneath, which may look untidy. You will also have a ridge at every overlap. It would possible by better to hammer the ends flat and then butt them up against each other.
