Q: Do the trains need to be primed?

No. My son just painted them. You can do more than 1 coat so the color is more vibrant but I didn't see the need for primer. He actually made me order them again because he liked these so much. We painted the 2nd set like a CSX train and with being thrown around and played with the paint isn't even scatched after 3 years.

Q: What kind of wood are these made from? Would you be able to whittle one?

You should be able to whittle, cut, or sand the top wood parts. Beware that some of these have multiple pieces of wood glued together so that may make it harder to whittle.

Q: Is it possible to detach the wheel bogies from the big diesel engine or large express coach?

the car base and its wheels are not detachable.
