Q: Are these wood? Are they made in China ?

They are definitely NOT wood. They are made of soft plastic. Some are flat solid pieces, the larger ones are filled with air. The set came in "Frustration-Free Packaging" so I don't remember noticing where they were made. They are very detailed and realistic, so at the price I paid ($22.50 from Amazon before Xmas 2015) I would bet a lot of money that these were made in China.

Q: Are they mini or larger pieces of food?

They are not life size, but I would'nt call them mini either. I bought them for my 3 year old son to play with in our play kitchen and they will work fine. He has enjoyed "cooking" with them.

Q: Which is a better package this or the group of three breakfast, lunch and dinner?

Not sure...the breakfast, lunch, and dinner package comes with drinks.

Q: Has anyone used these as legitimate food models? (Like - to show portion sizes?)

The sizes are not accurate for portion sizes.
