Decent, but not great
Decent book. Has a few typos in it, more than are usually in a textbook actually, but for the most part it does a decent job of explaining things. Unfortunately the end-of-chapter questions sometimes are on topics that are not covered in the book, and you would have no way of answering them without the solutions manual (or a strong background in physical chemistry). The book can do a better job of explaining certain topics that are more important to understand, but it's not bad.

Important for biophysical chemistry
The item was in incredibly good conditions.

Solution manual A MUST HAVE
The solution manual actually taught more on how to do the problems than the actual book did. However, the book did do a nice job for those questions that you may have, but do not necessarily need for an exam. Conceptually, it's all there. Example problems were lacking and few in each chapter, but with the solutions manual, each problem does a good job of explaining major concepts and minor points.

Great book to learn from
This is a great book to learn from, either on your own (as I did), or as a text book for a class.

As reported before, my version also had a flipped cover. I worked through the whole thing and was very impressed by the start. With a good "fundamentals" Section, you get a great introduction and - although it's quite difficult to achieve at times - the authors always try to make connections to the biological sciences. I also liked the "brief comments" and "in the laboratory" boxes and the general structure of the book. From the "contents" Section, you immediately see that the book covers many of the modern techniques in biochemistry and it should be mentioned that this was the reason why I chose to buy it. For a text book of this quality and these topics, it's well-priced. Both the number and quality of illustrations are good. Working through the topics, however, the quality of the book goes through a turning point: With chapter 3 ("Biomolecular Structure"), the reading speed and comprehensibility begins to drop. The last part (chapters 9-13) clearly does not read as well as the first. First of all, there are small errors in the text, but these don't disturb the reading process. More annoying is that several figure captions are misleading or just too short. What really slows the reader down and kills the fun of reading this book is that quite a few technical terms are just mentioned, but not explained in any way. If you want to understand the last part of the book (as mentioned, this was the one most important to me) completely, you basically need 1-2 additional textbooks in order to look up and understand all these terms. In contrast to the first half, there are no tips for further reading and it's difficult to understand the topics which one is not already familiar with. It's understandable that topics such as quantum mechanics and NMR techniques are difficult to describe and explain to students of the life sciences, but this was accomplished very well in the first half of the book (covering thermodynamics and reaction kinetics). Altogether, it feels like the last part of the book had to be finished quickly and ended up in far lower quality. Overall, this is a good text book for students of biology and biochemistry and a nice life science version of Atkins' Physical Chemistry.

An excellent overview of physical chemistry which I wish I had had access to many years ago when I did my biochemistry
