Use mine every day + HOW I FIXED MY N700
It's too bad Logitech stopped making these excellent lapdesks. I bought mine in April 2011 when I had a laptop with a mono speaker. It sounded horrible. I've since switched to another laptop, but I still use the n700 for the great sound and decent cooling ability. It's plugged into my work laptop, which is the computer I use the most. Unfortunately I think the bearing on the fan is starting to go. Sometimes when I start up the computer the fan will make a rattling noise. I have to whap the bottom of the lapdesk a few times for it to shut up. Since these are now so expensive, when the fan goes I'll see if I can crack it open and fix it. Has anyone attempted a fix on these? If so, how did you get it open? I don't see any access screws. UPDATE: FIXED! My fan finally pooped out after about 4 years. I lucked out and scored another N700 on eBay, so I decided to take a stab at fixing the old one since I had a replacement. It turned out the fan was just clogged with dust bunnies and hair. I also noticed a large capacitor was bulging out, which is an indication it is failing. Here is how I fixed it better than new! 1.) Pop off the speaker grills by lifting up the edges at either side. They are held down by posts that fit into screw holes with little rubber inserts. You should be able to pry them up with a fingernail or flat tip screwdriver. This will reveal four small Phillips head screws on both sides of the center plastic piece. There are 11 total, but three are hidden under the long trim piece at the bottom edge. 2.) Remove the screws you can access and set them aside. 3.) Pry the bottom panel up starting from the left side. This is the long piece with the flip up tabs. You'll definitely need a screwdriver for this. It's held on by a row of six clips located near the bottom edge. You'll feel them pop off as you go. Underneath are three more small screws on the central plastic grill. Be careful to only pry from the bottom edge, or you can break the tabs holding the screws. The clips are sufficient to hold it in place, so if you break one or two it's no big deal. 4.) Remove the last three small screws and put them with the others. You may be able to remove anything clogging the fan through the large round hole over the fan. Just plug it in and test it. 5.) If it's still not working or if you want to check the capacitor (which I recommend) unplug it and remove the larger Phillips screws that hold the large board that the fan and speakers attach to. There are nine screws on each side and one just over the fan, 19 total. 6.) Lift off the middle board. It should come off easily if all the screws are out. 7.) Clean underneath and remove any dust bunnies. 8.) Check the capacitor for signs of failure. It's a large black cylinder wired to the circuit board and impossible to miss. If the ends are bowed out and not flat, it needs to be replaced. Replacing it is so easy a monkey could do it. All you need is a soldering iron, solder and a replacement capacitor. You can replace it with any capacitor with a capacitance of 22000uF and a voltage greater than 6.3V. They are very cheap on eBay. I bought a 16V 22000uF capacitor for under five dollars shipped. The only thing you have to worry about is it can't be longer than 45mm because one of the speaker wires runs right behind it. You can use fatter capacitors, but you may end up having to trim part of the plastic case. You won't see the repair after it's reassembled, so don't worry about that. Mine was too fat so I just cut the depression it sits in out using a Dremel. You can use a soldering iron to melt the plastic (I don't recommend using the one you're going to solder with) but if you do that you'll want to remove the bottom padded part because it's filled with foam. It's held in with a lot more screws, three clips at the top center and a little adhesive. Just remove the screws and pry it off around the edges. 9.) Unscrew the circuitboard. It's held on by four Philips screws and has a soldered ribbon cable that connects it to the button panel. You don't need to remove that, just unplug the wires leading to the speakers and USB connection. Flip the circutboard over and remove the old capacitor. It is a through-hole connection and there are tons of videos on YouTube showing how to replace capacitors, so I won't go into detail. The only thing you have to worry about is making sure the stripe on the side of the capacitor is facing the TOP EDGE of the lapdesk. The side that points away from you when it is on your lap. The stripe indicates the negative terminal, and it will not work if you attach it with the polarity reversed. 10.) Reconnect the wires to the circuitboard and plug the board in to test it. Try some audio, and if it works you're done and just need to reassemble! If the fan still doesn't work, you may need to replace it. It's computer fan, make and model Evercool EC8010TL05E. The dimensions are a 80 x 80 x 10 mm. It's a standard size, but not very common. Be careful as there is also an EC8010TLL05E. Note the second L. While this fan will work, it has a slower RPM and will not move as much air. Luckily mine did not need replacing, but fans from other companies should work as long as they have the same dimensions, voltage and draw the same or fewer amps. You can find generic fans with the correct specs on eBay. The circuit board has a 2 pin connector, but if all you can find is 3 pin there are cheap adapters you can use. According to the Evercool site, the specs are: Voltage VDC: 5V Current AMP: 0.28 Input WATTS: 1.4 RPM: 2500 Good luck!

Great item, though far from perfect.
I bought this lapdesk for the speaker system, but received so much more. My Acer laptop just doesn't put out much volume. You can't even hear most videos on it at all unless you strained your ears. Enter the Logitech N700 Speaker Lapdesk. This is definitely a great item, though far from perfect. It has an idiot-proof set-up. Anyone can do it. No software is required; just plug the USB cord into a slot on your PC and it is ready to go. To my pleasant surprise, it has great sound. I read the positive reviews about the bass and great stereo sound, but I knew I wouldn't believe it until I heard it myself. Well, now I have and I couldn't be more pleased. For comparison, my Acer laptop goes up to volume number 100, which isn't very high for streaming movies. The same volume with the Logitech is a mere 30, and even this low setting sounds better. You can hear the bass. The Logitech also goes up to 100, which is way louder than the laptop and loud enough to be heard in another room. Of course, this isn't a stereo system. Don't expect it to sound as good as one. It is a great sounding system in itself. My stereo fanatic husband was impressed with it, which says a lot for me. You'll enjoy listening to CD's and watching movies with this item hooked up to your laptop. Also, as the other reviews stated, the fan runs silently, though, if you want to check on it and see if it is running, all you have to do is tilt over your laptop and you will hear it running. It keeps my PC running cool too. The day I received it, my laptop was on for 6 hours straight and there was no heat building up; it wasn't even warm. It's been a couple of weeks now and my netbook and laptops have no over heating issues. As for the battery, I have noticed with using the lap desk, the battery does drain more quickly. It sits comfortably on the knees. Those are the pros. Now onto the cons: there is no extra USB socket or plug through available on the Lapdesk. When you plug it into your laptop, you lose a USB socket on your laptop. There isn't a light on to show you the fan is running; though there is a red light on when you have the speakers on mute. Hopefully, Logitech will fix these minor issues in future models. The new car odor that emanates from the time you take it out of the box and being used is a strong one. I've had mine out of the box a few days and the smell is just now beginning to fade. These are just minor issues that really don't affect the usability of this great item. However, the biggest problem I have encountered with the Lapdesk is a major one for me: this cool, useful lap desk doesn't work on an older Dell laptop running XP. No matter what I did I couldn't get it to work. Perhaps it needs new drivers; I'll have to check. As it stands straight out of the box, it's no go for the Logitech Lapdesk and my Dell Inspiron 1100. It does work on my new ASUS netbook running XP. Go figure. It also doesn't seem to be fully compatible with my Acer laptop running Vista. I know that you can't run another sound device when using this desk, but evidently you can't open another program, too when watching video when running this. I don't know if this happens with everyone or just me, but every time I have the lap desk on, and play a movie from Netflix or Youtube, and then I open another program, say Word, the PC freezes and I have to shut it down manually with the power button. I can't even bring up Task Manager because the whole thing including the cursor is non-responsive. There's nothing in the literature about any of this. I'm wondering if it is a glitch in the Lapdesk. Has anyone else experienced anything like this with their laptop and this Lapdesk? This has happened to me three times consistently. Everything operates smoothly as long as I don't do anything else on the PC while running the speakers. Overall, I think the Logitech N700 Speaker Lapdesk is a useful invention. It's one of those items you lived without until you got your hands on it and now wonder how you ever lived without it. UPDATE: June 24, 2012: I still own this and it is still working great. The issues I had experienced with the Acer Vista no longer exist. Maybe an update fixed that. I just bought a Acer 5750 from Amazon with Win 7 and this lap desk works with it too. No issues. Do I still like this item? Yes, very much.
