Great Book, Great Memories, Great Safe Buy
What an amazing story!!! I am 55 years old and read this book when I was about 13 years old while sitting in the back seat of the family station wagon while travelling down the highway on a family summer vacation. It really brought back great memories. My 13 year old son has read it twice and he loves it. Now he wnts to spend more time in the outdoors. He also said he wanted a pet falcon but I had to explain to him that it is actually illegal to capture and own a falcon unless you have a license for it. He then changed his mind to wanting to camp out in the truck of a tree. I had to remind him that we live in Louisiana, and not the Catskill Mountains.LOL.

Peace & quiet/survival skills for apocalyptic, emo tweens!
I purchased this book for nostalgia purposes because I wanted to see if "My Side of the Mountain" was really as good as I remembered. It was. I first read it at age 10 (I'm now 55).The fantasy of running away to the deep forest and living alone in a hollowed out tree is powerful to a misfit kid. What surprised me is it's also a powerful escape for a misfit adult. With all the stresses of life today, the idea of peace, tranquility, and solitude in a place where people aren't screaming at and attacking one another is attractive, I would imagine for just about everyone. As good as the book is, I can see how the archaic language could be a hurdle for contemporary kids. Think Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew books of yesteryear. It should, however, be cool for advanced readers, tweens, and older. For the younger kids, it's a read-to so parents can translate out of "Old English" into modern English. The book also provides a learning experience. The wilderness survival skills described in the book are real and could be potentially life-saving in the impending zombie apocalypse. So, yes. Great, potentially useful book that will make your kids *want* to run away (thereby leaving you in peace), and as such is worth a few bucks for the contentment it could buy you.

Great book
It was a great book. Sam Gribley lived off of the land alone until his family came back! The end.

finally read it!!
i saw this book and hated it purely based on the horrible cover of the edition i had when i was a kid. i swore i’d never read it. but now, all these years later, i’ve finished it and i liked it. i felt it was a cross between those frontier stories Disney used to make and Transcendentalism for kids. the main character is even referred to as Thoreau. it’s not an exact comparison, but several themes are there. besides this, it was a fun story. like the boy version of the girl getting ready with woodland creatures helping her. the boy however has a weasel, a raccoon, and of course a falcon, besides a handful of other forest animals. this wasn’t at all what i’d imagined it to be. i liked this book.
