Nicholson could play his role in his sleep (the Oscar he won should have gone to Robert Duvall for The Apostle), but his mischievous persona is precisely necessary to give heart to his seemingly heartless character, who is of all things a successful romance novelist. As a single mom with a chronically asthmatic young son, Hunt gives the film its conscience and integrity (along with plenty of wry humor), and she also won an Oscar for her wonderful performance. Greg Kinnear had to settle for an Oscar nomination (while cowriter-director James L. Brooks was inexplicably snubbed by Oscar that year), but his work was also singled out in the film's near-unanimous chorus of critical praise. Absolutely great film. Great writing, great acting acting and a fun film to watch. German produced Blu ray superb picture and sound. Took longer to get than BR shipped from the USA but since this film on BR was not available there the extra time was well worth the wait. Thanks.

I love this movie. I've watched it several times. The great Jack Nicholson is fabulous in this movie. And I love the acting of Greg Kinnear. Each character is sensitive and masterful in their acting. Parts of the movie are funny, in-depth, sensitive, sad, and hilarious. There are many emotional parts of this movie to think about. It's on my top 20 list. Rxplores the Challenges of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in a Humorous Way
Jack Nicholson does an amazing job of portraying a lonely talented professional writer with an inability to develop normal relationships with neighbors, his psychiatrist, and a favorite waitress working in a nearby restaurant. The initial scenes of the movie portray Nicholson as a narcissistic jerk; however, this is done in a very humorous way. Helen Hunt does a masterful job of portraying an incredibly kind single mom who Nicholson admires. For anyone dealing with a friend or family member battling obsessive-compulsive behavior, this movie is a must-see.

Greg Kinnear stole the show.
A bit of a Romance but not to squishy for us guys. Love Jack in this as an unapologetic Anti-Semite and Homophobe suffering from OCD. But really he's a softy in the end.

Not a Helen Hunt fan, but otherwise a good film
A puzzling film. First saw it in a theater ages ago. With much appreciation of Kinnear, Nicholson, and Gooding Jr., decided to give it a second try. (Each of the three actors is excellent in this movie.) The stumbling block to the film the first time was Hunt. And now on viewing a second time, it’s still Hunt. Hunt overdoes her character and often just wears on the viewer with too many mannerisms, facial contortions, and too much ‘sincerity’. (She is outdone in her overacting only by her mother in the film.) The premise of the story is excellent – i.e. nothing like being in need to discover who are the true friends. The dog is adorable. Recommend the movie, yes. But be prepared to find Hunt’s acting more like overacting.

NO SPOILERS. I AM NUMBER 3412 AT REVIEWING THIS MASTERPIECE. ALL I CAN SAY IS I WILL GUESS ALMOST ALL REVIEWS ARE ALSO FIVE STAR. TO UNDERSTAND THIS FILM IN ALL ITS MASSIVE COMPLEXITIES AND INTRICACIES IS TO COMPREHEND LIFE AND ALL ITS JOYS AND SORROWS. DOES THIS NOT EQUAL.....CASABLANCA....OR GONE WITH THE WIND....OR CITIZEN KANE? OF COURSE IT DOES. KUDOS AND ENDLESS ACCOLADES TO THE THREE PROTAGONISTS PLUS ONE DOG. THIS IS THE LOVE STORY OF THREE PEOPLE WHO FIND THEIR TRUE SELVES AND EVENTUALLY HAPPINESS. ONE MAN HAS OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER, THE OTHER MAN IS GAY AND SUFFERS MANY INDIGNITIES, AND THE WOMAN IS A NOT SO SIMPLE WAITRESS WITH A SICK CHILD. ALL OF THESE PERSONS WILL BE BREATHTAKINGLY BROUGHT TOGETHER AND MADE HAPPY. A MORE JOYOUS AND COMEDIC, DRAMA AND PIECE OF CINEMATOGRAPHY CAN NOT BE CREATED. ONE EVENT AFTER ANOTHER WILL BEING JOY OR TEARS OR LAUGHTER TO THE AUDIENCE. THIS FILM WON THE OSCAR FOR BEST ACTOR, I.E. JACK NICHOLSON AND ACTRESS, I.E. HELEN HUNT. ALTHOUGH IT IS A FEW YEARS OLD, NOT ONE SECOND IS DATED. I WOULD BE REMISS IN NOT MENTIONING THE THIRD GREAT PROTAGONIST OF THE FILM,I.E. GREG KINNEAR, WHO SHOULD HAVE WON BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR. Buena película, con actores relevantes, Jack Nicholson, Helen Unt .....etc. comedia muy divertida.

Bellissimo film, completo in tutto, dalla sceneggiatura fino alla straordinaria interpretazione degli attori. E' un cult non a caso, poichè unisce commedia, dramma e grande recitazione senza strafare o cadere nel patetico, e come al solito Jack Nicholson ha cucito su sé stesso un personaggio memorabile, affiancato da una eccellente Helen Hunt. Consigliato per tutti: da vedere!

Well the movie is a personal choice.. someone will give it a five, some will give it a one. Arrived the very next day. Well packaged, it was brand new, excellent quality.. it played perfectly. I don't know what more I can say about a DVD LOL
