Making Moving Toys and Automata

This is the second book I've gotten from Robert Race and I like it. It's cleanly written with good descriptions of the mechanisms of the toys and automata. Lots of examples and things to make and samples from all over the world as well as projects of his own showing how to utilize the ideas of that chapter. I'm trying to learn how to make moving art and this was definitely a big help in getting me going in the right direction.

Love the historical background to these automata/animated toys. Another big plus is the materials-on-hand style of the author's projects , which carries over from his previous book. They appear that they're meant to played with (even by adults) and not just a decorative item for desk or display shelf.

Lots of useful information BUT lacking step-by-step pictures, visually showing how pieces are put together. Photos of supplies are nice but some things need to be SEEN not just explained in words.

It turns out to be a revfiew of his collection. not worth the money

The quality of the content exceeds anything you will find online. The book is laid out methodically, with clear explanations and excellent pictures. The author takes very little credit for the fantastic job he has done. Although he makes no mention of being a teacher, he is obviously an experienced tutor, and articulates his thoughts perfectly. In each chapter, he takes a classic moving toy, and expands on it to show the mechanics behind it, and how you can make similar (or better). He always uses readily available materials, and explains any tricky parts. At around £10, I found this book to be fantastic value.
