Great Slingbox replacement system
I bought this unit as a replacement for the Slingbox. Once the device is setup it works perfectly. But it does require some adjustments because it is not a self contained system like the Slingbox was. It needs to be first setup using a computer. There is a booklet included with the encoder (or online) and the steps must be followed exactly as written. It's a little bit of a challenge because not everyone is conversant with network settings, etc. But following the instructions step by step will get you there. The device is a video encoder meaning it takes whatever video signal source you have available (cable, satellite, camera etc.) and it will encode it and send it to a URL that can be accessed anywhere in the world. In my case I chose the VLC software application to view the cable box signal. There are other applications out there that can be used if wanted. The last thing that's needed is a device (separate) that can be used as a virtual remote control. I use a TV cable box as my video source and I need to operate the cable box remotely so I can watch the video in another location. I ordered a Broadlink IR/RF universal remote and set it up where the URay encoder is located. Once setup, this works perfectly and the picture quality is great. It truly is a life saver for watching TV remotely. Last but not least, URay has an extremely responsive support team which I have contacted twice and received feedback less than 24 hours later by email. I have been using this encoder for over 2 years now. Thank you URay for providing this capability.

Picture Perfect
I had my doubts about this compact device knowing how hard Windows machines work to encode an rtmp stream, but I am extremely happy with it after seeing it in action. My company needed to establish an internal corporate media broadcast channel for remote working employees to watch live video events and prerecorded video messages. After seeing the cost of running an Azure VM for encoding 7x24, we decided to move the rtmp stream to an internal server which worked well. Servers are also expensive and require some level of ongoing support, so we decided to try the wifi enabled URayCoder stand-aloe box to encode the output of an internal video bulletin board PC. The result is amazing. Our office network is highly secure so we use the units ethernet connection for inbound only admin/management connections, and transmit the rtmp stream via the wireless network to the internet - so fully infosec compliant. The HDMI passthrough also works well. Since we placed the URayCoder between the PC and video bulletin board, the video bulletin board large monitor is now fed from the URayCoder with zero loss in quality. Great Tech Support to boot: We wanted to update the unit with the latest firmware as a precaution, so sent an email to [email protected] as directed in the documentation, and after sending Mark my proof of purchase and current firmware rev, I received the latest firmware in less than 24 hours.

Can't Encode Multiple Streams at 1080p 60FPS, Outdated, No Support, Better Options Available
After doing lots of research trying to understand the capabilities of this device, I ordered one only to find out it falls short of what I was expecting it could do. They do not clearly state the abilities of this device. I was looking for a multi-input device that is capable of encoding multiple stream (in this case 8) at 1080p and 60FPS. On testing this device was able to handle one or 2 inputs at that framerate without issue. Connecting more inputs causes the streams to start to stutter and drop frames. Lowering the framerate to 30FPS or changing the resolution to 720p and 60FPS allowed the device to stream without stuttering but I only tested this with 6 inputs, not the full 8. I returned the device because of this. The interface on this unit is something that likely was created 15 years ago; the manual talks about using CGI for controlling the device which is long obsolete. If you are looking for something more modern than can handle multiple inputs at 1080p 60FPS and many many more options look at the LinkPi devices, that is what I ended up with and could not be happier; they are also much cheaper and well supported. I will note I contacted support and never heard back.

Works very well for custom applications
The primary selling point on this encoder was the support for protocols like RTSP. I created custom software using ffmpeg and gstreamer that can use RTSP protocols to grab feeds, stream, record, create multiviews and so on. This worked really well for this application, the video quality has been outstanding with even relatively low bitrates which is a good measure of the quality of the encoder.

Buggy interface.
Randomly locks up and you have to do hard reset. Couldn't even complete the setup. Gave up after resetting the encoder 5 times. Reached out to their support via WhatsApp for new firmware and no response.

BUYER BEWARE - There are two versions and seller might send you an old one!
I've bought four here, all from URayTech. The first two sold in August '23 worked great so I ordered two more in Sept '23. Unfortunately these didn't work so hot, they couldn't properly handle 720x480i@60 (popular format for retro video games) - wasted hours trying to get it to work. What's going on? After consulting with tech support they let me know that the two I'd just bought were an older chipset that cannot be upgraded and I was out of luck. A little scammy considering the "NEW CHIPSET!" stuff in the product page text, right? If your firmware version is 2.06W5-V4-U, you have the old versions. 1.63CU3-L55M-U is the new version. (It also has more options, like a download firmware button) When asked if the company had any solution for me, the answer was negative. UPDATE on 10/11/23: After I wrote this I received an email from URayTech: The old firmware CAN still work with that resolution, but you must enable the "field to frame" option. I tried it and this indeed did fix the problem. So while I'm disappointed I got older stuff on my second purchase, at least things can work with some twiddling, so so I've changed from 2 star to 4.
