The springs do not want to straighten out. Instructions say nothing about this. Can anyone explain?

The springs are not supposed to be flattened out. Flattened springs will result in a less supportive seat since you want the springs to naturally bow upward and consequently resists the downward force of sitting on them. When installed the springs should have a slight upward curve to them. If the spring is too long for the chair, it will be very easy to install in the clips and will require almost no pulling to get the spring attached on both sides.
