Painless Grammar (Barron's Painless)

I am a middle-aged guy who got this book to help his son with grammar. The presentation is for middle-school kids, but I found it fun to read. I found it an excellent refresher for me. I liked the list of redundant phrases on page 227. I think middle school is your last chance to reach your child and help him with grammar. When your kids hit high school they don't want mom and dad involved with their schooling. Or, if you are just interested in a review of grammar, this is a good book for adults. It is readable. A college handbook of grammar is a reference, but not a book you sit down and read like this one.

It doesn't matter how old you are-- regardless of whether you are still in middle school or you just received your fourth Ph.D., you will be able to appreciate this book.The entire Baron's Painless series is terrific. My brother, who is a writer, expressed some concern that he had always had some difficulty with the rules of grammar, so I bought him this book along with Painless Writing book (for good measure), and he loved them both.This book makes grammar EASY! (Do people actually say that often? That grammar is easy? No.)Rules are broken down and explained in a way that makes grammar accessible. My brother told me that it was almost like waking up and realizing that you understood grammar. Combined with simple practice opportunities laid out in the book, it becomes easy for your to overcome old, bad writing habits.

This grammar book explains its subject quite well. I would have liked to have seen more pages for review or quizzing; there are several questions at the end of each large section, but it includes so many different examples of grammar mistakes (for the student to correct), that the student has to turn back several pages and dig out an obscure point. I realize students don't care for excessive repetition of exercises, but I feel this very good grammar tool could have been even more effective with a tad more in the way of intermittent review sheets. The illustrations are cute, the print is clear and not too crowded, and the smaller size makes the book easy to take along. The answer keys found at the end of each section are a little unexpected (we keep turning to the back of the book), but we are getting used to that. Overall, a very useful product.

This was a cute book and definitely help refresh my grammar skills. It has been 10 years since I was in college and this book help my writing improve. It has earned it place among my go to references.

I've learned so much from this book. I wish I would have had it back in high school before I took the ACT or in grad school when I was turning in papers everyday. Everyone can learn something from this book and it's one of the few books I've encountered that actually makes grammar fun to practice and learn! I now keep it on my desk for reference! After realizing how helpful it is, I bought a copy for a high schooler in my life who is preparing for the ACT. I think it's easier to learn from than the test prep guides (I'm referring to only the English and writing sections).

Love this book. I have used it for years with my students of all levels. It's a great reference for students to refresh their basics or give them human-friendly explanations of basic grammar. I suspect it would be very valuable to students for homework or homeschooling as well.

This is a great review for those who have been using grammar check consistently. I purchased this book because I was studying for an exam. Me and commas don't get along. This book is very easy to read and understand. I love it's simplicity, and at my age that 's valuable. It's a great reference book I now keep on my desk at work. I did my research and this is a series of books. The others were helpful too.

I'm not a school teacher, I no longer have children at home, and I needed to get back to the basics to write with ease. This is exactly what I was looking for. I have forgotten so many basic rules of writing since my childhood. I'm taking on a new challenge in my life and that's to become a blogger. I have a lot to learn and this, together with Painless Writing, will be my sidekicks. It took me over 10 minutes to write this short review. How ridiculous is that! I struggle to write, but I press on. Thank you.

Great book!

Helped get me through a post-degree grammar course. I know I would have flunked out without it, and that's about as good as it can get for praise.Recommended for beginners and experts alike; easy to read, easy to understand.

ただいまこれをやっている途中です。まずはじめにペーパーバッグにしては中の紙は綺麗でつやつやしていました。なんといっても挿絵がやる気を出させてくれます！私はこういうのが好きです。フォントも丸みがあって馴染みやすい。日本人にとって一番苦労するのがほぼ真逆の文法、この本は一から英語の基礎を教えてくれます。私の中学時代の英語のテストはいつも50点以下でしたが向上させてくれそうです。文調が普段の話し言葉のようで面白いです。例文の中にいくつか日本人の人名が出てきたりして親近感が沸きました！少々印刷ミスがあったような気がしますが気にならないので今のところは問題無いです。楽しい一冊です。

This is not an official grammar text book but it does help clarify grammar usage. It is written in simple terms and gives examples and practice assignments.
