I originally wanted to start learning Korean because my boyfriend is Korean and his parents don't speak English very well, but now I really love the language. This book is definitely good for beginners. It teaches you about culture along with the language in a pretty easy way to understand. I used it along with the workbook and it makes learning so easy and fun. The introduction was tough to get through because it's long and you're learning completely new letters and sounds that you've never made before, but the book gives examples and enough exercises to make it simple to learn. There is a lot of repetitiveness and writing what seems like the same sentences over and over, but this helps out a lot in memorization and practice. I also love that the workbook comes with online audio that you can listen to online or download for free! I was on page 12 before I realized this and was confused because some of the exercises have a small picture of headphones next to it that indicates you need the audio clip, which I didn't realize. On the back cover of the workbook, it gives you the url address of the audio clips. Once I found this, it was a lot more helpful. I would most definitely recommend this to someone wanting to learn Korean. Review: fantastic book! screw the rest, this is it. - I've tried other books, and honestly, i love this one the best. I learned, in the first few lessons, things i never learned in my 2 years of slow, independent studies ( i still study independently) and since i got this book, my motivation for cracking down, and the pace at which i'm learning the material has increased substantially. The book teaches you hang'l in the beginning, but it's up to you to memorize it and get used to it yourself ( i was already familiar but struggling to read well) because it does not use romanization at all in the lessons, but this is what i was looking for, because i wanted a book that made me do the hard work and get used to reading hang'l, so that i could begin recognizing whole words right away instead of taking it syllable by syllable. I now read almost 10 times as fast since i started using this book. My reading and writing skills with hang'l are much more proficient. Also, when they DO use romanization, in the rare case, they use McCune-Reischauer, which i find to be the most logical and effective way to read romanized korean with fluidity and ease. buy this book.

Really wonderful language books
I'm really honestly 100% surprised with how much I was able to get out of this course level (leaving the same review for Beginning 2 since I've completed both books). I struggled with teaching myself Korean for about 10 months with other books and programs until I took a friends advice to just purchase these same college textbooks she used for Korean and learn right from the books. I wish I had done it sooner! The University of Hawaii has really impressed me with their set of Korean language books. The vocabulary and grammar are introduced and explained so clearly I rarely ever had to pick up my dictionary (though the grammar was a little more difficult to grasp than the vocab I still managed). Though I don't recommend using the textbooks alone for self-study I can say if you're going to take that route, start speaking from the very minute you open these books! I made the mistake of not asking around my friends (who speak Korean) to practice with me because now I've gone into the Intermediate levels without having any speaking practice, all I can do is read and translate (fairly well, but I would probably be much better if I could verbally speak it fluidly as well) so I'm still struggling but its not too bad! The lessons may seem a little cheesy but I think they are put together so well I really honestly had fun learning from these books at my own pace. I highly recommend making an account on Memrise and adding the Integrated Korean lessons to your account to study the vocabulary, that's what I did and I've been able to master around 800 vocabulary words from Beginning 1 & 2 with the help of Memrise! Its definitely worth a try. I really not only love how each lesson is organized but also the Appendix has all the listed grammar rules throughout the book making it really easy to find if you forget them! All in all Integrated Korean is a wonderful set of books to purchase and 100% worth every penny in my opinion regardless of whether you're purchasing them for an actual Korean course or just teaching yourself!

Not a stand alone solution.
This is a text book designed for classroom learning. The text book itself refers to teacher functions and checks to be performed by the instructor. Impossible without a teacher. IE; IT needs a teacher. The main problem is you MUST hear the words for proper pronunciation. There is no means to verify without audio. There is no audio with this course. A U Hawaii reference to mp3 files that do not correlate to the book. It may have applied to revision one of the text book. Bottom line is this text book would be fine in a classroom setting with native korean speakers present for pronunciation. I have found it useful as a reference but not worth the cost/benefit in it's outside the classroom usage. pro's: some good reference material cons: this is not a stand alone solution you cannot learn korean from this outside a classroom, no audio.

Great book for students learning Hangul
There are seven chapters in this book and they have topics related to being a college student or being in korea. Some of the chapters cover these topics, =Korean Language Class, My Day, The Weekend, In Seoul etc... I never took a formal Korean class, and I found this book very straight forward and easy to understand. I like how even tho this is a beginners class they already force you to read and write in Korean from the first chapter. Not much use of romanized Korean words which is great. Appendix is also adds some everyday important terms like counters, honorific expressions, realitves, numbers etc. Over all very good. I showed this to my korean friend and she was happy haha..

I LOVE this. Although I don’t listen to a lot of KPop, I enjoy watching K Drama so some simple words that are usually repeated in dramas I understand. This textbook (with the workbook) is AMAZING. I can read the Korean alphabet which helps me comprehend Korean words (may not understand as much). Very informative however, neither of them have answers to the activities which is probably the only disadvantage.
