can this machine be used to sew leather - as in making harnesses?

The maximum lift of the foot is 3/8". If the leather assembly is 5/16" of less it will sew it. Make sure to get some leather needles for this task. I would say at least size #20 or #22.

Does it have an automatic bobbin winder

Yes, there is a bobbin winder on the top of the machine. With a second cone of thread (there are two threadstands included with the Plus package) you can wind as you sew. If you do not wish for the needle to move while winding, simply remove the posi-pin.

Can this run on 12 volts?

It is a 120v AC motor, so it will not directly run on 12 volts. It has a relatively low power requirement, so it will run on small inverter. We recommend a minimum of 250 watts.
