Q: Will this take the weight of a 4ft fish tank .

Yes, if you get one that assembles correctly. The materials themselves are very sturdy, but some of us have had problems locating the screws correctly, so that the table is unstable. Having said that, 4ft is a big tank ... and the table is just over a metre long-?

Q: Does it really only weigh 0.5 kg? Surely that's a mistake?

It's 15 Kg according to the box.

Q: Could you paint or varnish the wood slab on top?

I guess with a suitable type of paint or varnish you could. It would likely be a lot of work though as you'll need to paint on primer so the subsequent coat has something to bind to and then you'll need to add a sealant layer. I went for the grey topped desk and I think it looks very nice and so far seems to be hard wearing.
