My husband's waist is 44 and these are just right for him. I would try the l/xl then downsize if needed. They expand as needed but aren't baggy.

As a wife with a man with a large tummy, I agree! They should have four sizes~~Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large. I would send the manufacturer a complaint if I were you.
