YOUNG JAMES HERRIOT
Y**S
In the spirit of every James Herriot novel that I've read!
Poignant...Beautiful production. If you're a fan of the 'All Creatures Great and Small' series or James Herriot's novels, this is a must see. So wish it had been picked up by ACORN for more seasons. Ben Lloyd-Hughes, as always, rocked as Rob McAloon!

Life before Siegfred
Even if you have never heard of All Creatures Great and Small, this is a short series that anyone would find appealing if you enjoy period drama. The persona of James Herriot is carried back in time to his university days and one gets the essence of Herriot's training for his career as a vet. His personality traits are very similar to what one expects and stays true to form. Although some of the characters are loosely based on other students Herriot knew, there seems to be a "Tristian" as well as a "Seigfred" personalities to play off of. I found the shooting of this drama to be rather dark in appearance which was a little off-putting. However, as for character, style, story line and over-all acting, it was totally interesting and well done. I would like to see more, which is a good sign. I have always rated the All Creatures Great and Small series as one of the finest ever produced and never tire of viewing this story. I would definitely recommend this dvd and believe you will not be disappointed in the product.

Disappointing: Smears All Creatures with 21st C Schtick
I am a dyed-in-the-wool, eternal fan of all the James Herriot books and TV shows. I bought this DVD hoping for more. The production values were very good. Like others, I would have appreciated more outdoor scenes, but the darkness of various indoor or courtyard scenes seemed appropriate. I don't mind a different cast; this one is...okay; the lead is actually not bad, especially considering I am so dependent on Christopher Timothy. I was prepared to tolerate a different cast. However, the suffocating 21st century themes ruin this production. They abound: the brassy feminist who petitions for women's restrooms and smarts off in class, the simplistic male chauvinist professor played by the wonderful Gary Lewis, the none to discreet allusions to sex for the sake of sex in the dialog. None of this tone was in the earlier books and DVDs.I think the writers used the original texts and flew off to their own male-female fantasies which are completely grounded in the last couple of decades of Anglo-American culture. It is crude and the utter charm of the James Herriot/James Alfred Wight's original pieces is absent. The writers distorted, even left behind, the charisma of the original books, the original TV series. This is not at all a worthwhile contribution.Years ago, Mary Ann Grossman, of the Chicago Tribune reviewed James Alfred Wight's writing and commented in part," (there is) a glow of decency that makes people want to be better humans." I am no sociologist, literature professor, or historian, but I think these writers missed the essence of the James Herriott texts and created something that does not at all fit with the real works.

A Great Visual Experience
The stories of J. Herriot are stunning in their descriptive power of the Yorkshire landscape and this tale, sadly only one season, was still a great effort by the BBC.

I had higher hopes....
After then well done PBS series All Things Great and Small, I had very high hopes that this would be as charming and well done. While it tries, it falls short. And, there was supposed to be a second season.......

A truly beautiful movie
This was a beautifully filmed movie that could stand on its own. It is a prequel to the older much-loved British series by James Herriot. We could watch it over and over again and still find something new to enjoy and wonder at. The character development is great. It is a window on a world that has definitely moved on. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who appreciates the British style of storytelling.

Tea and Sympathy
We have all the DVDs for "All Creatures", thus we are great fans of that series. This new set was easy to add to our favorites list. The actors are great and they draw you into their world. The production values create an atmosphere that seems appropriate for the period. We really like the approach of UK actors and directors. This may not be everybody's favorite beverage but it is ours.

Good period piece
This DVD had a lot of good character plot to it and the set was authentic. Issues such as women's equality were well dealt with as well as different levels of society. Lot to it and I highly recommend it.

Not as good but worth seeing really enjoyed listening to Mr. Herriot's real son talk about his life, and all
Yes this was interesting I LOVED the All Creatures Great and Small series!! This was a gallant try and worth seeing but not up to the original this was too forced not as genuine as the original stories for sure and the tories later expounded on his work not as great by Hardy and Timothy and Davison so worthwhile! These young people also good but the writing trying too hard not surprised there wasn't a second series

Got to watch the two disks just yesterday and was immensely pleased I got them. I don't know whether or not a girl student would have worn pants in the 1930s, but then again, as a farm-raised girl, she might have. But I am nitpicking ; this was a wonderful story !

I absolutely loved it!
I bought this for my partner for Christmas and honestly didn't expect to like it. I was wrong! I absolutely loved it and would watch it again, given the chance. The script is well written and the production is very authentic to the period. If your'e a fan of Yorkshire Vet, All Creatures Great and Small or just enjoy this type of show, you won't be disappointed!

Disappointing
We watched both discs in one sitting , but were very disappointed . The stories were not well told and vacillated between animal friendly and human interest and to be honest we found all the acting to be a bit wooden ......
