A Poor man's sub
I have been a professional musician back in the day. I learned that one does not have to spend a large amount of money on speakers to get the sound that one is seeking. These are not the speakers costing five hundred dollars that you place in the mains cabinets, they are the ones you put in your guitar rig and bass cabinets. And when living on a shoe string budget I can say with a surety that the local band down the street is likely using something very similar to these. I was given an old patriot sub cabinet with no driver and had chosen the Pyle PLW10RD as a compromise to spending a wad of money on an unproven cabinet. The cabinet is a folded horn style with 1.42 sq feet and being tuned around 25 to 30HZ. A little wood glue, acoustical foam (shipping box foam) and paint put this cabinet back in order. I paired the speaker up with the Boss Audio Systems CE502 500 Watts 2-Channel MOSFET Power Amplifier running in bridged mode. Along with the amp I installed the Boss CAP2S 2 Farad Capacitor. I now enjoy a clean tight bass. A little hint: mix the sub cabinet so that you can hear the Mallet of the bass drum in both the sub as well as in the mix of the center and front speakers. Jazz, Blues, Alternative styles and good old Rock and Roll sound superb this way! This is not a speaker you pump 1500 watts in to; this is not a speaker that will shake your friend's car next to you. If you give this speaker time to break in it becomes very efficient and clean. While not being a true audiophile I do enjoy music that is reproduced without being distorted or having the car becoming one huge vibrating unit that everyone laughs at as you drive by. This is a fine speaker that does its job, and does it well.

stopped working in 1 hour
hooked it up sounded great till it just stopped working i hooked my old crappy sub in and it worked fine. i plugged a speaker in, it worked fine. so the pyle turns out to be a pile. it was worth the shot. i had it hooked to a jensen amp that is the same specs as the sub.

Plastic parts aside, very impressed.
Good sound for $37. Buyer beware the speaker basket and mounting edge/rim are plastic. When tightening mounting screws the plastic can bend.

Better than expected, satisfied with purchase
I purchased these to replace the old and blown woofers in my home stereo cabinets. I was concerned because these are 4 ohm and the original speakers were 8 ohm. The amp I have is rated 8-16 ohms. I have to keep from turning it up to high volumes or the amp gets really hot and the fuses in the cabinets blow out. I found that out the first day I started using them. I don't think this is the fault of the speakers, it is likely because of the ohm mismatch. I set a fan near the grill that vents the amp's heat sink and that helps keep it cooler. The speakers sound great though when listening to rock music or with movie/tv sound! Now I need to replace the mid and tweeters so they match the sound quality of the subs. I wouldn't hesitate to install them in an enclosure for a budget car audio system. They may not sound quite as good as the kicker subs I have in my car, but for the price they are well worth it.

Better than I expected!!!....
Bought this to replace the failing 10" sub in a ported tube that I bought at a swap meet used at least 10 years ago...The tube I believe came from JC Whitney and the speaker in it was a "Thump" brand, very cheap and I'm surprised it held up as long as it did really...I have the tube in a 1990 Honda Civic hatchback (my work/winter car), and I spend quite a bit of time in it so wanted more than just the door speakers (Pioneer now) to supply the tunes...Don't enter "sound off" competitions, just want a good sound in my car for the least amount of $$...I'm also a long time musician (bass player) so sound quality is pretty important in my audio system...I ordered the speaker over this past weekend, and it arrived yesterday (in two business days)to my surprise..So I grabbed a couple of screwdrivers and installed it in the tube....Was immediately surprised at the sound coming from that cheap tube...Deeper and more thump (yes I said thump...lol) than the speaker it replaced...In nice weather I usually ride the motorcycle to work and rock the stereo I installed on it, but I really wanted to break in this new sub, so took the car....More I played it (every break and lunch), it just sounds better....I listen to hard rock/heavy metal, and depending on the band/recording, some of the low bass (5 string bass range) felt just like I was standing in front of my 400 watt Peavey stack with my Ibanez 5 string in my hand...I could hear the license plate bracket on the car vibrating, the mirrors were vibrating, and I could feel the kick drum and low bass in the seat back....Totally could not believe that cheap tube I bought so many years ago was producing that much sound with just a speaker upgrade...I also added a layer of Poly-Fill mat to the ported end of the tube a couple months ago when I was double checking connections and wiring inside hoping it was just a bad connection that was letting the original speaker cut out...The matting helped get rid of an annoying harmonic frequency (sound waves crashing into each other) that the tube was producing before, and that was VERY evident with the new speaker..Very smooth and even frequency response with no bad harmonics going on now...So for the price of a case of cold beer, I made a cheap sub tube sound like a custom enclosure costing many times the $20 I paid for the new Pyle sub...Huge "bang for the buck" ratio....

GREAT SUBS
I know that most people think just because these are super cheap they must be pretty bad too. THEYRE WRONG! I have two of these in the back of my 2008 Saturn vue wired at 250 watts each at 2 ohms on a 1100 watt boss amp and they pound! I can turn the bass halfway up and they are still louder than any other of my friends systems. I put them in a vented box so they would be louder. It's been said that vented boxes don't sound as good but unless you are super picky about that stuff you won't be able to tell the difference. It's not like you can hear the music anyway(; overall these things are worth it. If one of them does happen to get blown out I really wouldn't care cause I know I can get a new one for 30 bucks lol. If you are debating whether or. Ot to get these... do it!

Set these up right, and there will be no problems. For the price, and excellent buy.
After reading many critical reviews of these speakers there is a reoccurring theme. People complain that the speakers "blew" prematurely. I wager that in most of these cases it was not the speakers fault. There are several factors that will ensure best performance (or guarantee failure). For example: The box design and volume does indeed have a major affect. If the box is too large or improperly ported there will not be enough pneumatic dampening of the speaker. This will allow over excursion at lower power levels, and eventual failure. If the crossover point is set too low, again the speaker will do its best to reproduce low frequencies below its design limit, and die trying. And third, the gain on the amplifier is probably set too high. Gain is what will prevent and protect the speakers from clipping. If you set these speakers up properly, these speakers work fantastic. In most unsatisfied cases I would attribute it to "pilot error". For a good resource on proper set up I recommend a YouTube channel "CarAudioFaprication". As for me, I am very satisfied with these PLW10RD. For the price, an excellent buy.
