Sodom

With a title like "Sodom", and an opening scene of a naked man handcuffed to a lamp post, you might think you've somehow gotten the wrong movie. On the other hand, if you've always wanted to be a fly on the wall while two people have a deeply personal conversation about their innermost fears, concerns and their lives, then you won't be disappointed. The two characters spend the wee hours of the morning drinking Mescal and learning that Life isn't easy for everyone, unless you learn to deal with it on its own terms. You take what you think you want/need and then just leave the rest. Very well written and directed, with a minimal soundtrack, "Sodom" barely speaks above a whisper, but it keeps us hanging on every word because the words are real. Any one of us could have this discussion. Or have had it. Or wish we could have it. Despite the low-key, honest atmosphere the film gives us, there is always just enough to make us want to learn more about these two men. One wants what he once had, and one wants what he's afraid to have. Just when we think it's all figured out, it's really not. No spoilers here. Some might hate it, some might love it, but "Sodom" delivers an age-old message in a different way, and it remains true to itself. Worth a view if you're in the mood for a thoughtful, provocative--almost voyeuristic--look into the few short hours of two lonely, but hopeful guys.

The script was totally believable to me - maybe my experiences were more in line with the script than others. The confusion vs longing was beautifully portrayed. Jo Weil is an accomplished actor and portrayed the more confident (yet still vulnerable) and slightly nonchalant older man who appears as if he would be obviously straight. Pip Brignall is a great find and great new talent. His character claims to be straight but appears to be easily considered as gay (his boyish looks can be construed as being feminine). His hesitancy and confusion over what he is experiencing, what he wants, what he considers to be his future, is so well portrayed. Embarrassed, awkward, sexy all rolled together. A very good actor and he held his role very well, and complimented the more experienced Jo Weil. I loved the intimate conversation of this movie - just a quiet and honest conundrum for these 2 men presently in 2 very different sets of circumstances. I hope to see more of both these actors. Bravo!

Wished I could give 3.5 stars because the photography, the lighting and the sets are quite beautiful. Our star-crossed lovers are luminously presented in one of the most scintillating seductions I've seen in movies in a long time. YouTubers who follow international soaps, will recognize Jo Weil (Michael) from the German soap, Verbotene Liebe (Oliver). He is very good in this entirely english speaking role. Pip Brignall, is also very good as the completely conflicted Will, an engaged soccer pro hopeful. The occasion of the meeting of Will and Michael is quite contrived and barely credible, but completely (albeit possibly gratuitous) sensuous, sexy and wacky practical joke. And the script, while not terrible, tends to prosaic monologues, which draw viewers into the characters, but slows the pace of an already hackneyed, slightly maudlin narrative, but it's romantic--in that Anna Karennena way.

Not a bad movie. I wish it was a little more physically revealing to be candid. The casting was so confusing to me. There are two lead characters one of them is a slightly older gay man comfortable with his sexuality that is gorgeous and the other is a younger man that identifies as straight that is a football player engaged to be married in 8 weeks that has hooked up with a man 5 times before. The actor portrays him well in regards to being sexually confused but this guy is really feminine and just physically looks gay from head to toe and when he is originally found at the beginning is naked and wearing makeup. He's skinny with skinny eyebrows and big lips and wavy hair and a receding hairline.. just looks like a flamey older twink and yet the lead character who is very handsome and really masculine is always telling this guy that he thinks he's the most beautiful man he's seen in a long time and that he comes across as straight. My grandmother would think this guy is gay in a lineup. I think they cast him because he's a decent actor but they should have went with someone that looks like a soccer player and look straight because they keep making these references that he's got a female fiance and has everyone fooled and yet every scene you look at him and he honestly looks like he does drag on the weekends. The other character that is gay and has been in gay relationships is the one that could pass for being straight. A good movie is all about suspending disbelief and I had a hard time with this one. You definitely believe he is struggling with his sexuality but you don't believe that any of his friends are family think that he's straight even if he has a fiance lol. It's also a little hard to believe that this gorgeous guy is so mesmerised by him. The ending is also a little abrupt and awkward and poorly written.

May as well been a play as it takes place in an apartment, for starters.Good Looking Guy ( GLG) helps out Some Skinny Naked Guy (SSNG) from a lamppost. GLG is instantly smitten, in spite of SSG’S face, partially concealed by hideous raccoon makeup, presumably executed by his jokester friends, who handcuffed him to the post. At GLG ‘S apartment, sex and conversation take place; lots of talk revealing the most mundane of revelations. In the pursuing 4 or 5 hours, GLG falls further in love with the SSNG, who spends most of his time asking for stuff: clothes, drugs, bath time, alcohol. He even goes through GLG’s drawers when he’s absent from room. And after all he’s done for him!There is no real ending and I suspect writer realized he had nothing to add, got bored and just ended it.

Un bel film con bellissimi dialoghi. Bellissimi i protagonisti. Il finale...inaspettato! Il film é sottotitolato in inglese! Da vedere!

I was curious about this film after seeing the limited trailer for it and I must admit I was pleasantly surprised,The story can seem a bit slow but the actors playing the main characters give a great performance and make it a film worth watching,If you are in two minds about this film give it a try as the plot is something that could happen and probably has at some point.

What a wonderful movie. It's not often that a movie with such a small cast, in this case two, will keep my interest. It did in spades. I've watched it twice and it's the small details the second time around that added more meaning. If you're not into intimate, almost real time moving films, this is not for you. The overall feel and look of the film is wonderful and it's made it into my small collection that I can watch repeatedly w/o getting bored.

L'éternel histoire du gay assumé mais solitaire et du gay qui ne s'assume pas. Vont -ils - arriver à dépasser les conventions et à s'aimer comme ils semblent le désirer... Ca pourrait être beau, s'il y avait un semblant de scénario et non des clichés alignés les uns aux autres. Ici le c'est l'ennuie qui triomphe dans un film gay pas sexy du tout en plus... Eviter cette purge !

Ach, es ist eine schöne Erfahrung, wenn ein Film, den man mit großer Spannung erwartet, die in ihn gesetzten Hoffnungen erfüllt. Das kommt selten vor. Im Falle von »Sodom«, den ich Ende September endlich zu sehen bekam, wurden diese sogar noch übertroffen. Es mag drei Jahre her sein, dass ich zum ersten Mal in einer lokalen Zeitschrift einen Spendenaufruf für dieses kleine Projekt las. Englische Produktion, in Berlin gedreht, mit queerem Background und Jo Weil in der Hauptrolle. Dann las ich lange nichts mehr, so dass der Verdacht aufkam, der Film sei aufgrund finanzieller Engpässe doch nicht zustande gekommen. Tja, und dann hatte er im Juni 2017 beim East End Film Festival in London Premiere und startete kurz darauf seinen festival run: Florenz, Los Angeles, Köln, Seattle, Kopenhagen. TLA brachte »Sodom« im September 2018 zeitgleich in den USA und in Großbritannien als DVD auf den Markt. Vielen Rezensenten tat sich sofort der Vergleich mit einem anderen englischen Film auf, und zwar mit »Weekend« (Regie: Andrew Haigh), der 2011 und 2012 weltweit für Furore bei den LGBT-Festivals sorgte. Oberflächlich betrachtet ähneln sich die beiden Filme tatsächlich ein wenig, doch wo Andrew Haigh auf glasklaren Realismus setzt, wählt »Sodom«-Regisseur Wilshin die Stilisierung. Schon in den ersten Minuten, wenn die Kamera die geschwungene rote Wendeltreppe hinaufgleitet, wähnen wir uns in einer hermetisch verschlossenen, ganz eigenen (Traum-)Welt. Später, wenn wir die Stimme Billie Holidays hören, die »Willow Weep for Me« plärrt, vervollständigt sich das Bild isolierter Zwei- bzw. Dreisamkeit mit den beiden Filmfiguren: Weil, Brignall, Zuschauer. Das größte Plus des Films, so der englische Filmkritiker Mike McClelland, sei die Chemie der beiden Hauptdarsteller. Ja, zugegeben, die ist überzeugend. Das Herz und die Seele von »Sodom« jedoch ist das exzellente Drehbuch von Mark Wilshin, das eine im Grunde schon tausendfach erzählte Story so originell und tiefschürfend erzählt, dass man wie gebannt auf die Leinwand starrt. Die wundervolle Kameraarbeit von Beniamino Barrese unterstützt das Skript in einer geradezu kongenialen Weise und kann gar nicht genug gelobt werden.Was erzählt »Sodom«? Im Grunde nichts weiter als die Geschichte einer einmaligen nächtlichen Begegnung. Es ist ein one-night stand mit einem ausufernden postkoitalen Kennenlern-Gespräch. Zu Beginn des Films sehen wir Will (Brignall), einen 20jährigen Fußballer aus England, der von seinen Kumpels betrunken und nackt mit Handschellen an einen Laternenpfahl gekettet und zurückgelassen wurde. Gerettet wird er von Michael (Weil), einen etwa 40jährigen Berliner, der quasi um die Ecke wohnt und den jungen Mann mit zu sich nach Hause nimmt. Es kommt sofort zum Sex, bevor Wilshin — der mit »Sodom« übrigens seinen Regie-Einstand gab — uns die beiden in seinem subtil manipulierenden Skript als Symbole ihrer Generationen präsentiert: Will ist mit einer Frau verlobt, genießt aber gelegentliche sexuelle Eskapaden mit Männern. Zuerst scheint es, als sei er mit seiner Homosexualität nicht im Reinen — klar, er ist Fußballer! —, dann aber fragen wir uns, ob er nicht vielleicht doch ganz authentisch der neuen Millennial-Mode folgt und sich einfach in keine Schublade stecken (lassen) möchte. Michael hingegen verkörpert das Klischee der erfolgreichen, sexuell daueraktiven Sportstudio-Tucke, doch hinter der gelackten Fassade spüren wir eine tiefe Melancholie. Ist es die Einsamkeit oder etwas noch Traurigeres? Wir erfahren, dass er seinem langjährigen Partner untreu war, dass er berentet ist und dass eine geradezu peinigende Sehnsucht an ihm zehrt. Weils Spiel ist überzeugend, sein Michael ist verführerisch und verzweifelt zugleich. Beide Schauspieler agieren souverän und ungekünstelt. Pip Brignall setzt auf Körperlichkeit, die von Kameramann Barrese in schwelgerischen Bildern eingefangen wird. Will steht am Anfang seines sexuellen Lebens, während Michael bereits Teile seiner Biographie bereut.Ein Kritikpunkt an »Sodom« ist der Sex. Der Funke zwischen Will und Michael ist spürbar vorhanden, und die Kamera etabliert einen »schwulen Blick«, wie man ihn selbst im queeren Kino kaum noch sieht, aber die Bettszenen sind kurz und wirken befremdlich lieblos, die Choreographie des Aktes bleibt unangenehm im Gedächtnis. Im Grunde genommen ist dies kein Beinbruch, denn Sexszenen sind meist überflüssig und bringen die Handlung nicht weiter, aber »Sodom« handelt von einer sexuellen Begegnung und ihren Folgen. In diesem Kontext hätte man diese Momente sorgfältiger ausarbeiten müssen.Alles in allem ist »Sodom« ein vielversprechender Debütfilm, den man sich gerne öfter anschaut. Er zeigt, dass gutes Kino keine großen Mittel braucht, wenn die Voraussetzungen — in diesem Fall: Drehbuch, Besetzung, Ausstattung, Bildgestaltung — stimmen. Vielen Dank, lieber Mark Wilshin!
