why is this on a subscription? do they not last?

They last as long as you care for it, kinda silly for it to be on subscription, no need for that. Very sturdy and the best hairbrush ever made, I'll never go back to the normal ones and still laugh when I see them thinking of all the snags! In short though the subscription part should be ignored. Enjoy :)

Does this have a cover? It's not clear from the pictures
