The dogfight sequences between American and Soviet jets at the end are absolutely mechanical, though audiences loved it at the time. The love story between Cruise's character and that of Kelly McGillis is like flipping through pages of advertising in a glossy magazine. This designer action movie from 1986 would be all the more appalling were it not for the canny casting of good actors in dumb parts. Standouts include Anthony Edwards--who makes a nice impression as Cruise's average-Joe pal--and the relatively unknown Meg Ryan in a small but memorable appearance. --Tom Keogh Review: Top Gun Blu-Ray. Fantastic! - Fantastic quality on Blu-ray and HD-DVD for that matter. The DVD was great compared to the VHS tape. The Blu-ray and the HD-DVD are fantastic compared to the DVD. I have them all and have compared them all. Close shots are superb quality compared to DVD or VHS. As previously stated by others, some of the long shots and in particular the red sky at night shots are a little grainy. But guys, it was originally shot on film!! Flicking between the DVD and the Blu-ray playing at the same time shows much more definition in the in aircraft close shots. Detail is fantastic on all close-up face shots. Sound quality is fantastic as well. You can feel the planes as they fly by. For those who say the transfer to Blu-ray is not good, perhaps they need to upgrade their monitor! Even on my old 42" plasma connected by RGB leads, only connecting at 1080i the detail is fantastic, but much better on my new 46" / HDMI connection. As for the film itself I don't think it was ever advertised as an introduction to flying jets. It is a feel good movie. Great escape when you just want something you don't have to have a few degrees just to keep track of the plot! Fantastic film and fantastic Blu-ray transfer (except for some sky and long shots that don't matter anyway). The full length music videos are great too. These are not in HD quality though! Who cares! Lots of Blu-ray for the money. In you want a bit of a laugh and a great quality feel good film just buy it. If you want to learn to fly jets or want a film to make you feel good because you can explain the plot to your mates who don't understand it, perhaps it's not for you. Watch it with them. You may be able to chill for once. Review: Original Top Gun film: Brilliant - Went to see Top Gun: Maverick recently so decided after to buy the DVD of the original (which I used to open on VHS) to see if the original was still as good as I remembered. It is. Absolutely wonderful original movie which has stood the test of time. Great acting, good storyline and characters, great flight sequences.

Top Blu Ray
This is a review of the Blu Ray NOT the DVD. I'm sure everyone knows the story by now but in brief Tom Cruise plays Maverick who after an encounter with a pair of Migs which ends with his wingman handing in his wings is sent off to the Navy's Top Gun program where he battles it out with other pilots to be the best of the best whilst also battling with with an old story of an error his father made which caused the death of other pilots with a little love interest thrown in. Maybe not everyone's film and admittedly not the most intricate story lines of films but I really like it none the less. So a quick to the point review of the Blu Ray. Picture is much improved over the DVD, remember this is a 1986 film way before DVD was out and even more so before HD was thought of. I have to say I was very impressed with the sound over the DVD, planes rushing by were much more detailed through the surround and the overall soundtrack was greatly improved. I will reiterate this is a 1986 film and I've seen much more recent films not have the best transfer to Blu Ray.

This does not play on most video players in North America (Canada). This information should be added in the description. I was unable to enjoy my purchase :(

It seems strange review TOP GUN original movie at the same time TOP GUN MAVERICK released earlier - but there are issues with both movie that should be brought forward - and less than satisfactory produced Blue Ray copy. First, there is much than can be compared favorably with both movies - and that some can be shared by only one or the other. The on-deck carrier activity filmed in the second "Maverick" is superior in length and general quality from TOP GUN. Yet, for most it does is probably not comparable - unless you have "been there, done that" most would not notice the differences. Both movies do a good job of presenting the realities of air-to-air close-in combat....in that, one gets a sense of the realities of aerial combat - including the effects of G-Induced Loss Of Consciousness - the potential of either or both pilot and RIO to pass our during certain high-G maneuvers. In TOP GUN, the threat of a induced SPIN is also there when two aircraft are in very close quarters - and the second passes through the jet wash of the forward positioned aircraft. "Maverick" violates the Hard Deck rule in both movies - its a rule for a reason! It can kill. It is there to protect the aircrew and aircraft from unintended impacts with Mother Earth! It can and will be deadly. Both movies present a pilot too willing to violate the Rule Book, in that regard - and while it makes for more movie drama =- it should have been left out of both movies and a better scenario presented. The NOT SO GOOD. While the air-to-air video is great in both....TOP GUN presented a more realistic close-in combat environment with it's opponents - A-4 Skyhawks, flown by the "aggressor" squadron at Nellis AFB, Nevada. Pilots going to TOP GUN / Fightertown, Miramar knew that they will mostly encounter A-4 Skyhawks - simulating the MiG-17 - and F-5 Freedom Fighters or later F-5E aircraft. That was right in the first movie. What became wrong in the second movie was their continued us, when in the 2021/2022 environment meets a variety of contractor provide Third Generation "aggressor" aircraft - from French Mirage F.1, A-4, F-5, Saab Draken, and even some F-16A/B Fighting Falcons (until the contract was cancelled for the coming years, by the USAF). That the "Maverick" continue to present the same aircraft more than a decade later, showed how little impact (or knowledge, oh my....!) the technical advisors on the movie had. the WORSE....the "Maverick" opponents were supposed to be MiG (fiction aircraft)....the MiG's are way beyond "-28" in the first movie...and the Sukhoi Su-57 is the current 6th Generation fighter - about 100 in service in Russia (but not seen over Ukraine, yet). So, if you want a realistic portrayal of a "opponent", DON'T use the same of F-5's from the fist film that do NOT even have air-to-air missiles (AAM) under wing or fuselage! A better fit would have been to get USAF film of the Northrop YF-23 - loosing candidate to the Lockheed F-22 Stealth Fighter - and use CHINESE opponents aircraft.....for the YF-23 has a lot of looks like the PLAAF J-20 (did they steal much of the design? Beyond the subject here....). So, from the second movie, even the tactical situation is beyond belief (as are those supposedly SA-3 SAM sites). Lastly, the Blue Ray copy, a 2016 release from Paramount, required the Sound to be jacked-up way beyond the original TOP GUN movie to get the voice and movies effects....poor Sound editing! This copy came out of the UK (available in a whole series of languages) - maybe I should have just gotten the 1986 release! Heh, heh. Bottom line - there are good things and technical failures in both movies, that should have been corrected by Technical Advisors - which show you how little impact they have on Directors, Executive Producers, etc.!
